ADMISSION

Acceptance into the Visual Communication program is based on the outcome of a Spring Portfolio Review process. Upon acceptance students must declare BFA status with Advising. The process includes the following:

THE REQUIREMENTS

• A GPA of 3.0 is required upon admittance

• All foundation courses (117, 118, 101, 102, 104)*

• Art 265 Design Studio One*

• Art 266 Illustration Studio One*

• Art 205 Figure Drawing One (It is highly recommended that students applying to the Viscom program take this class as a prerequisite for portfolio review, but applicants without this class will still be reviewed. This class must eventually be completed as a requirement of the Viscom BFA degree.)

Transfer students need to articulate all transfer credits with advising prior to the Portfolio Review.

* These courses must either be completed by or be in progress during the semester of your review.

THE PORTFOLIO
• 10-12 pieces of work (should include projects from the above courses, but may be supplemented with work from other studio areas including self initiated work)

• Portfolios should include your name on all pieces and on the outside of the portfolio itself.

• Oversize pieces may be submitted without being housed in the portfolio. (There will be a designated place set up the day of Portfolio Review)

• Your presentation should be clean, well crafted, and professional.

• Portfolios will be evaluated in terms of the applicants level of conceptual and technical skills, understanding of composition and form, extent of experimentation and innovation, as well as effort and commitment.

THE ESSAY
• One week prior to the Portfolio Review date you will submit 5 copies of a brief (no more than one page) statement addressing why design/illustration is a career you would like to pursue. Leave all copies with Kelly Leslie in Art 203w or in her faculty mailbox located on the first floor.
