Studio Jazz Ensemble Performance
On Wednesday, October 24 at 7:30PM in Crowder Hall, the UA School of Music presents "Jazz from Coast to Coast," the UA Studio Jazz Ensemble's first concert of the 2007-2008 season. The ensemble has an extensive and varied repertoire representing styles and subtle characteristics unique to specific regions of the country and from around the world. This eclectic performance will showcase many of these different styles. The program will include not only contemporary works such as Maria Schneider's "Choro Dançado" and Bob Curnow's arrangement of Pat Metheny's "Minuano," but also some favorite standards such as Sammy Nestico's "Hay Burner" and Benny Golson's "Whisper Not" as recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra. The program will also include works by Bobby Shew, Gordon Brisker, George Gershwin, Moisés Paiewonsky, and more.
In addition, the concert will feature some of the university's finest music students. Soloists will include Katherine Byrnes (vocals); Jason Carder (trumpet); Robert Gibboni (woodwinds); Dan Puccio (woodwinds); and many more. The University of Arizona Studio Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Professors Jeff Haskell and Moisés Paiewonsky.
The UA Studio Jazz Ensemble (aka Jazz A) was founded by Tom Ervin in 1972. Jeff Haskell began conducting the ensemble regularly in 1977. In its ranks have sat some of the finest young musicians in Southern Arizona. The players' names read like a "who's who" and so does the list of soloists who have starred with the band over the years. The quality has always been high. In the 1980's, the band was hired to tour with Dizzy Gillespie, a tour that exposed to the students the great teaching expertise that Dizzy had at his command. In 1991, the band recorded an album with the great Billy Taylor Trio, soon to be released nationally. Moisés Paiewonsky, newly appointed trombone professor, serves as associate director of the ensemble. Together, Haskell, Paiewonsky, and the students continue to play the classics while exploring new material.
Trombone Ensemble Performance
On Friday, September 28, the UA Trombone Ensemble will perform Anton Bruckner's Inveni David at the Wind/Percussion first area recital of the year. The performance will take place at 11:00AM in the Holsclaw Recital Hall.
Faculty Trombone Recital

The UA School of Music presents "Both Sides of the Slide," a trombone Faculty Artist Series recital, introducing Moisés Paiewonsky to the UA School of Music faculty. On Monday, October 1 at 7:30PM in Crowder Hall, Paiewonsky will perform works by Mozart, Puccini, Sulek, Lynn, Ewazen, and more. Other faculty and guest artists on this exciting program include pianists Michael Dauphinais and Jeff Haskell; trombonists Rob Boone, Andrew Thompson, and Mike Wharton; bass trombonist Mike Becker; as well as Jack Wood on the bass and Fred Hayes on drums.
About the program, Paiewonsky describes, "From the beginning of the twentieth century, the trombone has fulfilled a dual role in Western music, being featured as a prominent voice both in symphonic works by some of the greatest composers as well as in the jazz idiom. This recital will highlight this versatility by exploring a wide variety of genres and styles, ranging from a Classical double fugue, a Romantic operatic aria, a Neo-Classical twentieth-century sonata, to a groovy Sidewinder blues. In addition, it will feature an exciting array of ensembles including the ever-popular trombone and piano duo, the heroic and homogenous sounds of the trombone quartet, and the exhilarating and dynamic 'bone band'."
