Bremen Town Musicians 2009

Bremen Town Musicians

Children everywhere love to “make believe”; sometimes they make up their own stories and sometimes they retell stories they already know.  This “let’s get together and play” idea is behind the University of Arizona etc… (Educational Theatre Company) production of Story Theatre running September 24-26 in the Marroney Theatre.

Originally developed by the late Paul Sills of Second City fame, Story Theatre includes familiar stories from the Brothers Grimm and Aesop.  The UA production will feature “Henny Penny”, “The Bremen Town Musicians”, “Two Crows”, “The Fisherman and his Wife” and “The Golden Goose”.

Director Kelena Jones, a senior Theatre Education student, has chosen to give the tales a modern twist while still keeping the educational message in the original texts.  Drawing from the idea that “stories create community” Jones has envisioned a world where children love the old stories and meet regularly to play them for each other.  According to Jones, “I chose to direct this play to depict the wonder in shared experiences through the power of human imagination and the stories that shape our lives.”

Story Theatre promises to be fun fare for the whole family and for school and home school groups.  Dr. Laura McCammon, etc… faculty mentor, notes that the program will include some suggestions for fun activities that parents and teachers can do with children after they have seen the show.

Running time: approx. 50 minutes.

etc…Educational Theatre Company was created to give students in the BFA Theatre Education program the opportunity to produce plays and educational programs for young audiences. The company is committed to producing quality scripts and developing new plays for young audiences. While the School of Theatre Arts faculty serve as advisors for etc…, productions are student-directed, designed and acted. The productions are performed first on campus and then toured to area schools during the fall semester of the academic year.
