How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying

Book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock & Willie Gilbert

Music & Lyrics by Frank Loesser

based upon the book by Shepherd Mead

November 3 – December 3

Marroney Theatre

Winner of the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama! Long before Trump’s “Apprentice,” there was J. Pierrepont Finch, a young window washer, who, with the help of a small self-help book and an entire secretarial pool, climbs the corporate ladder of success to the top of World Wide Wickets. When Finch finds himself in a bad situation his book doesn’t cover, he quickly realizes he’ll need to use his own wits to stay on top. Based on the book by Shepherd Mead, “How to Succeed…” has a knockout score by Frank Loesser (“Guys & Dolls”) that remains fresh and fun with songs like, “I Believe in You,” “Brotherhood of Man,” and “A Secretary is Not a Toy.” Guest director Andrew Holtz says, “It may be set in 1961, but the basic message of the story regarding nepotism, brown-nosing, favoritism, scapegoating, affairs between employees, people hired for their appearance, backstabbing and mismanagement within corporations is just as relevant—and funny—as it was over 40 years ago.”

Guest director Andrew Holtz is a graduate of Stanford University and The Juilliard School. He is currently the managing director of the Willows Theatre Company of Concord, CA. He has directed and musical directed dozens of Willow Theatre productions, and received several San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle awards for “Outstanding Musical Direction” and “Outstanding Direction of a Musical.” For the University of Arizona, he created the orchestral accompaniment for last season’s production of “Side Show” and has created musical arrangements for the UA performing group Encore! for the past three years.
