Sophos Virus Scanning and the Active Directory

The primary purpose of the Windows 2000 Active Directory administered by DANS is Sophos Enterprise Manager, which provides virus protection to all CFA computers running the Windows operating system. Since its deployment, the number of work-hours lost to eliminating viruses has decreased dramatically, particularly for computers running Windows 2000 or later.

Other benefits of the Active Directory Server are convenient cross-college file-sharing, without the risk of commonly exploited security problems that peer-to-peer sharing has, and regular backup of files stored on the server.

Sophos Enterprise Manager updates the virus definition files on college computers several times daily.

Latest virus news around the college: Sophos provides the following information on currently active viruses. If it's in one of these lists, it's also been updated with the CFA Sophos set-up.
