Figure 3. Motete

In eighteenth-century Mexico, a “motete” generally applies to a substantial Responsory that was not composed as an integral part of a complete series, but was intended to be substituted for a Responsory in a Matins service. The most common place for substitution to occur is the first or eighth Responsory, understandably, since the beginning or ending of a cycle would be the most propitious location for added splendor that an awe-inspiring motet would bring.
