A Select Bibliography of Performing Editions
Inter-American Music Review. Edited by the astounding Robert M. Stevenson, not only does this journal contain useful articles about this repertoire, but almost every volume contains several complete musical pieces. Most useful are the two volumes dedicated solely to musical pieces: vol. 6, no. 2 (Spring-Summer, 1985) and vol. 7, no. 1 (Fall, Winter, 1985).
CENIDIM. This abbreviation stands for the Centro Nacional de Investigación, Documentación e Información Musical «Carlos Chávez», the musicological research institute in Mexico City. Their editions are very high quality and amazingly affordable. Aurelio Tello has released several volumes of works devoted to Manuel de Sumaya (esp. Tello’s ed. of Sumaya’s Villancicos y Cantadas), and soon the villancicos of Gaspar Fernandes (17th century, very spunky). See Tello’s Tres Obras de la Catedral de Oaxaca. Also highly recommended are Juan Manuel Lara Cárdenas’s editions of Francisco López Capillas (17th century); his music reminds one of Victoria or Lassus. Simply write for a catalogue or go to their web site. They can be reached at: CENIDIM / Apartado Postal 61-031 / 04220 México, D.F. Their telephone numbers are: (011-52-55) 420-4415 or 689-4757.
