Auditions

When: Auditions for Vocal Ease and the Hepcats are held in April and
May for the next academic year. If there are any vacancies after these auditions, additional auditions may be held in the Fall. Hepcats auditions
(if necessary) take place on the first Monday of school and information about specific times and places can be found on the jazz bulletin board outside of room 214 in the Music Building. Vocal Ease auditions are scheduled separately and information about them will be posted in the same place. The commitment for each group is for the entire academic year unless other arrangements are made with the director of each group.

Format: The format for Hepcats auditions includes preparation of a solo (please bring music for the accompanist) and skills testing on music reading, aural recall, vocal independence and some improvisation. Lack of ability to improvise does not exclude anyone from participation in the group.

Who listens: Director of vocal jazz ensembles, Dr. Elizabeth Schauer and the graduate teaching assistant for vocal jazz ensembles will hear the Hepcats auditions and make decisions about membership. Returning members of Vocal Ease hear the auditions for Vocal Ease and make decisions about membership.

What we are seeking: vocal quality, musicianship, flexibility, a passion for music and performance skill. We value commitment, positive participation,
teach-ability and responsibility in our members.
