JANUARY 2008

UA SAXOPHONISTS SWEEP MTNAs—AGAIN!

Congratulations to Jonathan Wintringham, Arizona State MTNA winner, for winning the MTNA Southwest Regional Collegiate Woodwind Solo Competition this weekend in Las Cruces, NM. His program included works by Bach, Piazzolla, Swerts, Yoshimatsu, and Glazunov.

Also, the Catalina Saxophone Quartet (Kim Reece, J. Adam Briggs, Jonathan Wintringham, Derek Granger) won the MTNA Regional Collegiate Chamber Music Competition and will also represent the UofA and the Southwest Region in Denver. Their 50-minute program included works by Gavin Bryars, Alexander Glazunov, and Ida Gotkovsky.

All of these students placed above state solo and chamber music winners from California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Hawaii, and will now advance to the MTNA Nationals in Denver, CO this March.

Bravo!!

NOVEMBER 2007

Daniel Puccio wins the UA President’s Concerto Competition

-DMA Pre-candidate Daniel Puccio is the first saxophonist in over 15 years to win the Wind and Percussion Area’s President’s Concerto Competition! He will perform Glazunov’s Concerto in Eb, Op. 109 on February 2, 2008 with the Arizona Symphony Orchestra in Crowder Hall, with UA President Robert Shelton as the guest of honor, and again on Sunday, February 3rd at 3:00pm in Crowder Hall. These concerts will be broadcast on KUAT-FM Classical 90.5/89.7. Flutist Erica Schiller was named Runner-Up. Congratulations to Dan and to all the finalists for their wonderful performances!

-Four UA Saxophonists advance to Final Round of the Wind and Percussion Area’s President’s Concerto Competition

All ten finalists from the Wind and Percussion Area will perform on Monday, November 26 from 12pm-2:30pm in Crowder Hall. The judges are Cherry Beauregard, formerly Professor of Tuba at Eastman; Lindabeth Binkley, Principal Oboe, Tucson Symphony; and Homero Ceron, Principal Percussion, Tucson Symphony). Good luck to all the finalists!!

UA SAXOPHONE STUDENTS SWEEP ARIZONA MTNA!

-Congratulations to Jonathan Wintringham, Winner of the Arizona MTNA Collegiate Young Artist Woodwind Competition. Jonathan will represent the state of Arizona in the MTNA Regional woodwind competition held in January 2008 in Las Cruces, NM. Also recognized in the competition were UA saxophonists Derek Granger (state alternate), J. Adam Briggs (Honorable Mention), and Kimberly Reece (Honorable Mention).

In addition, UA’s Catalina Saxophone Quartet (Reece, Wintringham, Briggs, Granger) was named Winner of the Collegiate Chamber Music Competition, and will compete in January in Las Cruces, as well, for the opportunity to qualify for the MTNA National Finals in Denver, CO.

Congratulations to all of these fine students for their stunning performances!

SEPTEMBER 2007

-DMA student Daniel Puccio performed at the 28th Detroit International Jazz Festival on September 3rd as a member of the critically-acclaimed Bobby Streng Saxomble.

-DMA student Elizabeth Bunt is a founding member of the new Alati Contemporary Music Ensemble. The group will present a concert in November of new works received via a call for scores. In addition, Elizabeth will be premiering several new works for saxophone this season. Also, she has been asked to perform at the Electronic Music Midwest (EMM) conference in Kansas City this October. Elizabeth is GSTA for “Rock and American Popular Music” at the UofA.

MARCH 2007

-Congratulations to freshman Bill Patterson for being elected Drum Major for the 2007 UA Pride of Arizona Marching Band.

-The Catalina Quartet traveled to Toronto, ONTARIO, CANADA, to compete as one of six groups chosen in the MTNA Collegiate Chamber Music National Finals.

-The Catalina Quartet has been named winner of the MTNA Southwest Regional Collegiate Chamber Music Competition. The group will travel to Toronto in March to compete in the National Finals, representing both the State of Arizona and the MTNA Southwest chapter.

DECEMBER 2006

-DMA student Elizabeth Bunt (BM, Univ. of Northern Iowa; MM, U.Arizona) attended Imagine II Electro-Acoustic Music Conference this past November in Memphis, TN. She ended the conference with her performance of UA alumnus Christopher Biggs’ piece, “Extermintate All the Brutes” for alto saxophone and digital media. This event featured works mainly by university faculty composers. Some independant composers’ pieces and student works were also heard. Russell Pinkston, UT Austin, was the featured composer.

This February, Elizabeth will also be performing Chris Biggs’ piece as well as Josh Clausen’s “I’ll See You Tomorrow” at the Spark Festival for Electronic Music and Arts at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.

Currently Elizabeth has composers writing electronic and solo saxophone pieces for an upcoming solo recital:

-Junior Kendra Emery will spend the Spring 2007 semester studying in Paris, France through a University of Arizona exchange program.

-Senior Ashley Jarmack has been selected to tour with the Gene Krupa Jazz Orchestra throughout the Southwest March 3-9, 2007.

NOVEMBER 2006

-Studio members Kimberly Reece (BM, Lawrence University) and Jonathan Wintringham recently competed in the MTNA State Collegiate Solo Competition. Jonthan Wintringham was named the State Alternate, placing 2nd in the contest.

-The Catalina Saxophone Quartet (Kimberly Reece, soprano saxophone; Derek Granger, alto saxophone; J. Adam Briggs, tenor saxophone; Jonathan Wintringham, baritone saxophone) were named the Arizona state representative for the 2007 MTNA Southwest Regional Division Collegiate Chamber Music Competition to be held in Salt Lake City, Jan. 11-13. This Fall, the quartet joined the Camerata Career Development Artist Roster, and have performed recently in concert in UA’s Centennial Hall, opening for guitarist Jose Feliciano, and have been contracted for performances throughout the Tucson metropolitan area. Additionally, the group has been contracted to perform at the Festival Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado Internacional in Alamos, Mexico in January 2007.
