Charles Roe, baritone, Director of the Opera Theater at the University of Arizona, holds the Amelia Rieman Chair in Opera. With degrees from Baldwin-Wallace College (B.M.) and the University of Illinois (M.M.), he has performed leading roles with New York City Opera, Michigan Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Kentucky Opera, Toledo Opera, Connecticut Opera, San Antonio Opera, Utah Opera, Opera Pacific, Mississippi Opera, Cleveland Opera, Sacramento Opera, Lake George Opera, Art Park Opera, Arizona Opera and the Caramoor Festival. He has also appeared as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Toledo Symphony, Flint Symphony, Wichita Symphony, New Mexico Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony, Des Moines Symphony, Duluth Symphony and the Tucson Symphony.

In his 40 years of teaching Professor Roe has served on the faculties of Texas Tech University, Eastern and Western Michigan Universities, University of Southern California and the Music Academy of the West. Many of his former students sing in leading opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera. Former students include winners of regional and national competitions such as the Met auditions and the Artist Award Auditions sponsored by the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

He has sung in concerts in Europe, Mexico and Korea and remains an active performer. Upcoming engagements include singing the baritone solos in “Carmina Burana” with the Tucson Symphony in 2007. He serves as Chair of Vocal Arts at the UA.
