Welcome

Welcome to the website for the organ program at the University of Arizona. This program emphasizes both interpretive and creative approaches to the making of music at the organ. We explore performance practice issues, with the goal that the student will learn how to support each performance with historical, analytical, and artistic comprehension of the literature. Techniques authentic to specific periods and nationalities are a significant part of these studies, along with technical methods and exercises designed to assist the performer in the development of a fluent technique that includes the avoidance of injury and/or repetitive motion syndromes.
The introduction and development of skills in improvisation and composition for liturgical use are important items within the activities that take place during studio classes. Studio classes include opportunities to perform standard literature for fellow students and current and/or visiting faculty listeners. The needs and interests of individual students vary widely, and the balance of these creative and interpretive activities can be adjusted accordingly.
