Tryouts for the 2009-2010 Pom Line will be held on
Friday and Saturday, April 24th and 25th.

Registration

Tryout Registration will begin at 7:00 PM on Friday, April 24th, 2009 at the new Richard Jefferson Gymnasium on the UA Campus. You will need to turn in the Registration Form, Pom Line Agreement, and Acceptance of Criteria Form at that time (they are also available at the clinic). Please notice that if you are under 18 years of age, the Acceptance of Criteria Form needs to have a parent/guardian signature in addition to the student's signature.

Clinic

There will be a $20 clinic fee payable between 7:00 and 7:30 PM. The clinic will begin promptly at 7:30 PM. You will learn a technique combination across the floor, have first cuts and then those remaining will learn the dance routine that will be used for the second cut on Saturday. It is recommended that you bring kneepads to protect your knees during the clinic while you are practicing any floor work that may be included in the routine.

Tryouts

Candidates will be expected to wear jazz dance attire, and light street make-up to the tryout. Jazz dance attire could include any combination of the following: leotard, tights, dance pants, spandex pants or shorts, dance top. No shorts, t-shirts, skirts or sweat pants please. Tennis shoes, gore boots, or dance sneakers with non-marking soles must be worn to protect the gym floor.

1:00-?:?? Third Cuts including learning the Pom Routine, doing both the Pom Routine as well as Dance Routine and then performing your 30 second solo
End 2009-2010 University of Arizona Pom Line announced!

The first cut on Friday evening will be based upon the combination across the floor. The combination will be about 2 or 3 eight counts repeated. It may include a triple turn, split jump, and/or other dance moves. Dance Technique Criteria only will be used for this cut.

The second cut on Saturday morning will use all criteria. You will perform the routine learned on Friday night as well as perform kicks and splits.

Returning UA Pom Line members will perform the routines for the judges for the first and second cuts in 1, 2, or 3 groups. These demonstrations will serve as a guide for the judges in understanding the level of ability of previous line members. Returning line members will not be scored or formally judged until the third cut.

For the third cut, you will be taught a short Pom routine in front of the judges. You will perform both the Pom and Dance routine (possibly several times). You will also perform a 30 second solo in your own style of dance. Your music must be on a CD with your name clearly on it and will be turned in once you have made it to the third cut. The third cut may also include a short interview.

The 16-20 member Pom Line (this is an estimate), will be announced at the end of tryouts.

Tryouts last as long as it takes the judges to make their decisions. We hope to be done by 7:00 PM on Saturday, but be prepared for an earlier or later finish. Please bring fruit, snacks, or a sack dinner to help get you through a very long afternoon.

There will be a meeting for the newly selected Pom Line immediately following tryouts.

Miscellaneous Information

We will have scheduled April, May, and summer practices (TBA). Ladies are excused from these practices if they are out of state at the time. However, they are still responsible to learn the material on their own from the video.

Pom Line members must be back in Tucson on Sunday, August 9, 2009. Our first practice for Band Camp Week, known as “Pride” Week, will be held the morning of Monday, August 10. These dates may change slightly once the “Pride” Week schedule is finalized.

Regular practices are MWF 2:15 - 6:00 PM, Thurs. 8:00 - 10:00 PM, several Sundays 2:00 - 6:00 PM, several Fridays 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM, and several Saturdays 8:00 AM - 12:00 noon, as well as on game days during football season from 8:00 AM - 12:00 noon. These times are subject to change. If the line chooses to compete, it does not take precedence over our focus on UA performances.

We expect that expenses for new line members could run $600 or more during their first year.
