MA - Media Arts

Graduate students in classThe two-year Master of Arts (MA) program integrates history, theory, and criticism in film and television studies. The program prepares students for leadership in the media industries, media advocacy, or further study in doctoral programs, law, education, or business. Graduate students are required to have a two year residency in the Media Arts graduate program.

Students take lecture and seminar courses on film history, theory, and criticism, cultural and gender media studies, and media industries. Required courses help students to establish a solid base of media knowledge and research skills in the first year. Students enjoy intensive research and discussion in small classroom settings.

As students advance through the program, they sharpen their focus on personal areas of interest. Students structure their programs carefully with the guidance of a faculty advisor. Seminars, internships, individual studies, and elective courses are the primary vehicles by which students shape their individualized programs of study in the second year. The two required seminars must be taken in the second year of the program.

Teaching assistantships and fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis.
