Fall 2010 Admission

Applications to the Media Arts minor for Spring 2010 are no longer being accepted. Current UA students may apply in Spring 2010 to add the Media Arts minor for Fall 2010.
The deadline for applications is 4 pm on Friday February 19, 2010.

All current UA students wishing to become Media Arts minors must:

  1. be registered for class(es) at UA in Spring 2010,
  2. register for and attend one of the Media Arts minor information sessions listed below,
  3. have a cumulative UA GPA of at least 2.5, and
  4. submit a complete application by 4 pm on February 19, 2010.

If you do not meet all four of these requirements, you will not be considered for admission to the Media Arts minor for Fall 2010.

If your UA GPA is less than 2.5 you may still attend an information session, though you will not be allowed to submit an application. [First-semester UA students who do not yet have a UA GPA will be allowed to submit an application, but must earn a minimum UA GPA of 2.5 in Spring 2010 in order to be eligible for admittance to the Media Arts minor.]

To attend one of the Media Arts minor information sessions, you must first register (after November 1, 2009) by phone (520-621-7352) or in person (Marshall Bldg, rm 220). Each session holds a maximum of 20 students. Sessions are offered on the following dates:

A complete application to the Media Arts minor consists of the following:

  • Media Arts Minor Application Form
Application form will be available at the information sessions.
  • Statement of Interest – To give us a sense of how well a Media Arts minor matches your interests and goals, write a 250-500 word statement that:
    1. Explores the history of your interest in the media arts. (What in your past has brought you to this interest?)
    2. Explains what motivates your interest in the media arts. (What do you hope to achieve in the field of media arts?)
    3. Describes how the Media Arts minor will fit into your degree program, and discusses one specific project (such as a short film, a film analysis, a research paper) that you would like to work on while you are here. How will the minor contribute to your project?
  • Before writing your statement, be sure to look over the descriptions on our website of our major programs (the BA degrees in Film & Television Studies, Producing, and the BFA degree in Film & Video Production).
  • Essay – "Movies should have a beginning, a middle and an end," harrumphed French filmmaker Georges Franju. "Certainly," replied Jean-Luc Godard. "But not necessarily in that order."
Respond to Godard's assertion using specific examples drawn from a film or television program to support your argument. Be sure to construct a clear argument in your introduction that leads to a specific thesis statement, follow with your argument (supported by specific examples), and end with a conclusion. Your essay should be between 250 and 500 words in length.
  • Current UA SAPR
  • High School Transcript (new freshmen only) – All freshmen attending their first semester at UA in Spring 2010 must include a high school transcript. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

DEADLINE: Completed applications are due by 4 pm on Friday February 19, 2010. Late applications will not be accepted. ONLY COMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED.

Applications will be reviewed and admission decisions made by March 5, 2010. Students will be informed of their admission status through UA email within a week of this date. Students denied to the Media Arts minor may reapply in a future semester (if eligibility requirements are still met).

If you have any questions about the admissions or application process, you may contact the School of Media Arts by phone at (520) 621-7352.
