Faculty Highlights: New Faculty at the School of Art

 

Sama Alshaibi, Assistant Professor of Photography: Receiving her MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Sama Alshaibi’s multimedia work negotiates the shifts between personal, familial, and official history through photography, video, and installations. She is the co-founder of the 6+ women’s art collective and has been widely exhibited in international locations.

 

Larry Busbea, Assistant Professor of Art History: Larry Busbea's research focuses on both normative and exemplary aesthetic practices in Europe after WWII, with a special emphasis on intersections of art, architecture, and design. His book, Topologies: The Urban Utopia in France, 1960-1970, was recently released from MIT Press. Larry received his MA in Art History, Criticism, and Theory from State University of New York at Stony Brook and his PhD in Art/Architectural History from City University of New York.

 

Lawrence Gipe, Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing: Receiving his MFA from Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design, Gipe has pursued a 15 year project concerned with demonstrating the porous and interchangeable nature of authoritarian tropes throughout the 20th century. Gipe has had 35 solo exhibitions in US galleries and museums in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and, internationally, in Munich, Berlin, and the Künstverein Düsseldorf.  Gipe’s exhibition, Lawrence Gipe: Frontier Defense Images of Surveillance, was recently shown at Edward Cella Art + Architecture in Santa Barbara, California.

 

Frank Gohlke, Professor of Photography: A leading figure in American  landscape photography, Gohlke has taught at Massachusetts College of Art; the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley College; the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the universities of Harvard, Princeton, and Yale. A mid-career retrospective of his work is on view at the Amon Carter Museum from September 22, 2007-January 6, 2008. His works will be on display at UA’s Center for Creative Photography in the spring of 2008.

 

Dimitri Kozyrev, Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing: Receiving his MFA from University of California, Santa Barbara, Kozyrev has had multiple shows at Cirrus Gallery in Los Angeles and at Mark Moore Gallery this past summer. He has also been in a number of group shows in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and most recently in Amsterdam. Reviews of his work have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, Artweek, and Artforum.

 

Gary Setzer, Assistant Professor and Foundations Division Chair: Gary Setzer is an interdisciplinary artist who has exhibited across the country. His performances, installations, and videos often celebrate the humor and poetry of language’s inconsistencies. Setzer received his MFA from Ohio University and formerly taught at Bowling Green State University.

 

Ryan Shin, Assistant Professor: Receiving his PhD from Florida State, Shin’s research focuses on cyber culture, visual culture, art education, and Asian folk and performance art. His articles have appeared in Visual Arts Research, Journal of Cross-Cultural Research in Art Education, and NAEA Advisory. He actively presents at state, national, and international conferences.
