In order for production students to use departmental equipment, each student (and faculty) must sign into the MARPL system in person at the MARPL Checkout Desk.

When first starting the Media Arts program many students think that when Media Arts faculty or staff ask, "Are you in the system?" one is being asked if they have signed up for classes through the university database that is used by the Bursar and Class Scheduling. This is not the case.

The MARPL database is a separate database and is not linked with any other database.
Only Media Arts Production students can use the MARPL Equipment and use of the equipment is limited to class work projects. Moonlighting or shooting projects for outside projects are not permitted and breaking this rule could result in suspension of MARPL Checkout Privileges.

All Media Arts students and faculty who are eligible to use MARPL production equipment must establish an account at the MARPL facility.

MARPL Accounts are created in person at the MARPL Checkout desk. Phone calls are not accepted. a student must have a U of A CATcard ID in addition to having signed up for a production course.

When establishing a MARPL Account;

1.) The student must know what MAR course number they have enrolled in

2.) Produce a valid CATCARD

3.) Sign a MARPL CONTRACT to be put on file at MARPL checkout

4.) Provide a current phone number

5.) Provide a current email account

6.) and completed a Certification Document to go on file at MARPL before making reservations.

All of information is entered into the MARPL Account information database.
This account tracks all of the equipment a student uses and allows students to make equipment reservations when planning their productions.

All students must be "Certified" on every specific piece of equipment they wish to checkout. Certifications are required before a student can make a Reservation or actually check out a piece of gear.

The signed Certification Document provides documentation that the student understands how the equipment works and how to care for the equipment while they are using it by attending a Certification session with either the Production Faculty teaching the class or a MARPL representative.

Each MAR class has specific equipment needs and provisions…ie., Beginning students in MAR 210 cannot checkout Intermediate or Advanced Equipment.

Advanced students however can checkout all equipment in the lower classes if they have been certified on it, if so desired, for special cases.

Certifications are usually done during early in the term of the first LAB class times, however, because MAR 210 has three distinctive rotations covered in each class, they have three different certification dates.
Please check with your instructor for Certification Dates. Take great care to attend those classes. Your successful operation of the production gear will go a long ways to ensuring your productions have the look and sound you wish to create.

All Reservations must be done in person at the MARPL Checkout desk. Reservations will not be taken over the phone.

Students must show their CATcards at the time Reservations are made and when equipment is both checked out and returned.(checkin)

Each class has certain time allotments in which to both make a reservation and how long equipment can be checked out for.

Advanced Students in MAR 314, 315, 401, and 498 can reserve equipment up to two weeks in advance and it is highly recommended that they do so. The MARPL Checkout is based on first-come first choice and when specific equipment requests are asked for every attempt is made to comply with such requests. Also due to the nature of these productions, equipment checkouts can be up to one week in duration. Each production is analyzed for production time needed and can be negotiated should the need for more time be justified.

MAR 210, 304, and 305 can make reservations for equipment one week in advance of their production checkout time. All equipment is expected to be returned within the next day’s Check-In time.

"THREE STRIKES and You’re OUT…"
Failure to follow the procedure or rules concerning CheckOut will result in "Strikes," as in "Three Strikes. You’re out!" meaning , all subsequent use of MARPL Facilities will be suspended until the problems are cleared up.

If you receive Two Strikes, your professor is notified that there is a problem with your account.

If you receive Three Strikes against your account, all Check Out privileges are suspended pending notification of your instructor and the MARPL Coordinator. Suspension of MARPL Privileges can be temporary or permanent depending on the offense.
In addition you will lose ONE LETTER GRADE for accruing three strikes.

Reinstatement of Check Out privileges is at the discretion of the MARPL Coordinator with consideration of any recommendation your professor might wish to offer as well as any statement you might wish to give on your behalf.

All Students are expected to act in a manner congruent with the University of Arizona’s Student Code of Conduct and subject to all terms and procedures outlined in that document.
