MAR 303 Professional Practices
Course Description:
Professional Practices prepares students to meet the professional expectations of media careers. Students are introduced to career research, internship and job search strategies, résumé and cover letter writing, an industry roundtable and a mock interview. M AR 303 is the required pre-internship course.
Course Goals:
(1) To prepare students to enter the media arts field as professionals, and (2) To assist students with the selection of an internship position.
Assignments:
There are four groups of assignments:
THE INDIVIDUAL: Prepare a résumé (draft and final versions). The resume is sent to the interviewer for the mock interview.
THE CONNECTION: Prepare a cover letter (draft and final versions) to a potential employer or internship sponsor. The revised cover letter is sent to the interviewer for the mock interview.
THE WORKPLACE: Using research on the media arts career you wish to enter, participate in a roundtable to discuss issues relevant to the media arts. A professional from the media arts industries acts as the roundtable facilitator. Each roundtable has an agenda, developed by the students in the roundtable. Each roundtable in the course addresses a different topic.
THE FINAL STEP: Experience a mock interview with a media arts professional. Each student sends resume and cover letter to a media arts professional who conducts a mock interview with the student, in class.
