"Design is art people use."- Ellen Lupton

D.I.Y.: Design It Yourself is an exhibition demonstrating the belief that the creation and publication of one's own design is the practice of a free society.   The work in this show encourages us to try our own hand at design by celebrating simple technologies and de-mystifying those that are seemingly more complex.   By learning to "think like a designer," this exhibition asserts, we also learn to heighten our awareness of the media by which we are constantly surrounded, allowing us to clarify, realize, and ultimately claim authorship of our ideas.

Ellen Lupton, curator, is also a writer and graphic designer whose most recent books are D.I.Y: Design it Yourself (Princeton Architectural Press 2006) and Thinking with Type (PA Press 2004).   She is director of the MFA program in graphic design at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and is curator of contemporary design at Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City.
