ectasis
\Ec"ta*sis\, n. The lengthening of a syllable from short to long.
n : dilatation or distension of a hollow organ [syn: ectasia ]

The word ectasis , when used in the context of linguistics, refers to an expansion of sound. The word can also, however, be used in reference to the human body, indicating a dilation, an extension, a swelling of a hollow organ.   In either instance, ectasis invokes imagery of a slow, steady, almost imperceptible outward movement.   Incorporating materials such as paint, metal, and concentrated light, the works in this show suggest not motion itself but intended motion - or maybe, even, motion that has been captured and stilled.   Between the vibratory colors of Bruce Futrell's repetitive lines, beneath the shimmering membrane of Carrie Seid's oiled silk, and behind the illusory veil of Martina Shenal's floating scrim, there exists a quiet pressure, an expectation, the possibility of release and expansion.   There exists, in these works, the promise of ectasis .
