Just like learning any language, where it is essential to learn basic nouns and verbs, these rudiments are the basic tools (nouns and verbs) you will need to begin playing and communicating as a cohesive unit here at The University of Arizona. This will also carry over to any drumline you wish to play with in the future. During your individual audition, you will be asked to play several rudiments from the following list:
No. 1. The Long Roll
No. 2. The Five Stroke Roll
No. 3. The Seven Stroke Roll
No. 4. The Flam
No. 5. The Flam Accent
No. 6. The Flam Paradiddle
No. 7. The Flamacue
No. 8. The Ruff
No. 11. The Double Paradiddle
No. 13. The Triple Ratamacue
No. 14. The Single Stroke Roll
No. 20. The Flam Tap
No. 21. The Single Paradiddle
No. 22. The Drag Paradiddle #1
No. 23. The Drag Paradiddle #2
*No. -- The Paradiddlediddle
*same as No. 24 but without the flam
Study and learn these rudiments and be able to play them open to close back to open (slow to fast back to slow). It is essential that all incoming performers be able to play the above listed rudiments for two reasons: 1) It will be a "graded" part of the audition process; 2) it establishes a common drum-vocabulary between all of the incoming and returning performers. This makes it easier for the drum parts to begin being written since we know what to expect from all the performers. This in turn will make it easier for the performers to begin learning the music, as they will recognize these rudiments within in the music, as well as make it easier for the performers to play together sooner.
