Carlton earned his M.F.A. from the University of Arizona in 1986 and has been on faculty in the 3-D division for three years, teaching primarily in the areas of metal and wood fabrication. He taught at the College of Marin , in the San Francisco area, from 1989 - 1994. During this time he exhibited with the Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco, as well as participating in many group shows and competitions. He has also worked as an assistant to many sculptors in differing mediums (all aspects of foundry work, carving and fabricating wood sculpture and large-scale metal fabrication and installation). From 1995 - 2000, he worked for The Larson Company, here in Tucson, as a production sculptor and project supervisor.
