Ensembles

Orchestra

The tuba players at The University of Arizona have opportunities to play in a wide variety of ensembles. The University of Arizona Orchestra program, under the leadership of Dr. Thomas Cockrell, has two orchestras, the Arizona Symphony Orchestra, and the UA Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally, the orchestra program includes an opera orchestra that performs complete operas twice a year.

Band

The University of Arizona Bands program is among the best-known wind programs in the country. The Wind Ensemble, conducted by the Director of Bands, Professor Gregg Hanson, is the most select wind group, but the Wind Symphony, conducted by Professor Jay Rees is an excellent full-size ensemble as well. The Symphonic Band accommodates those students who can rehearse in the evenings, and of course The Pride of Arizona is our wonderful marching band, active in the fall semester only.

In addition to the large ensembles, studio members are able to participate in many chamber groups. Brass quintets and tuba quartets are all ensembles for "credit" and participation is even required for some degree plans. The tuba/euphonium ensemble operates within the master class and performs on a regular basis. The Camerata program is designed to assist young musicians in organizing a portfolio, preparing resumes and other promotional materials and is highly recommended.
